What are text faces (emoticons)?
Text faces, emoticons, Unicode faces, emojicons, emotes, kaomoji, Japanese emoticons and other names all describe text-based emoticons used to create facial expressions from characters. They can be typed on a keyboard or copy-pasted from the web. This page contains a list of text-face emoticons you can copy and paste. Some emoticons use characters most Western keyboards can't produce. Kaomoji, for example, are what most people mean by "Japanese emoticons" — they're built from Japanese and other 2-byte characters. Western keyboards don't have easy access to those complex characters without an extra app or input method, while Japanese keyboards can produce 2-byte characters and these emoticons naturally.
Kaomoji: Japanese Emoticons
Kaomoji (顔文字) is a popular Japanese emoticon style made up of Japanese characters and punctuation, used to express emotion in messaging and online communication. The word kaomoji is also used as a synonym for "Japanese emoticons". It comes from two kanji: "kao" (顔, "face") and "moji" (文字, "character"). The Japanese are an emotional and creative people, which is one reason emoticons are more popular in Japan than almost anywhere else. There's a saying that the eyes are the mirror of the soul, and unlike Western emoticons where the mouth carries most of the expression, in Japanese emoticons the eyes do most of the work. Another reason kaomoji are so popular: you don't have to tilt your head sideways to read them.
